A North Dakota Fireworks Referendum did not make the November 2, 2012 statewide ballot in North Dakota as an initiated state statute. The proposed initiative called for changing a state law that prohibited the sale and distribution of bottle rockets. The state law was approved by the legislature in 2009 and went into effect in August 2009. Specifically, the measure would have allowed bottle rocket sales to people older than 17 years old.[1]
According to reports, the petition was filed on May 11, 2010 and approved for circulation in late May 2010.[2]

The petition was valid for one year and could have qualified for the 2012 ballot. The petition ws valid until May 27, 2011. No signatures were filed, as of June 2011.
According to new census numbers, the measure required a minimum of 13,452 valid signatures in order to qualify for the 2012 ballot.
2010 effort
In order to qualify for the November 2010 ballot initiative supporters were required to collect 12,844 signatures by August 4, 2010. However, as of petition deadline day, no signatures were filed.
