The North Dakota Medical Marijuana Initiative did not make the 2012 ballot in North Dakota as an initiated state statute. If enacted the measure have would allowed patients with debilitating illnesses to use marijuana provided they were recommended to do so by a doctor. The measure was sponsored by North Dakotans for Compassionate Care.[1][2]
Supporters
State Representative Steve Zaiser stated his support for the measure, saying, "Marijuana has proven that it has helped people, and doctors will testify to that effect. I don’t want any more North Dakotans to suffer unnecessarily."[1]

Supporters were be required to collect a minimum of 13,452 valid signatures and deliver them to the North Dakota Secretary of State by August 8 in order to qualify the measure for the November 2012 ballot.
Rep. Steve Zaiser submitted the initiative to the North Dakota Secretary of State on May 22, 2012 for approval before circulation. The petition was then approved for circulation on June 4.[2]
Supporters, reportedly, submitted 13,500 signatures on Monday, August 6.[3] The Secretary of State had until September 10 to very the petitions.
On September 4, 2012, Secretary Jaeger announced that the measure would not be on the ballot due to the invalidation of hundreds of signatures. It was determined during the verification process that several signature gatherers for the measure committed petition fraud by falsifying signatures.[4]
