North Dakota Supreme Court hears "Fighting Sioux" nickname case
March 24, 2010
BISMARK, North Dakota: Today the North Dakota Supreme Court will hear the University of North Dakota's "Fighting Sioux" nickname case.[1] The court will decide whether the previous ruling by the Devils Lake District Court was correct or if the ruling should be overturned. Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation had previously filed a lawsuit in an attempt to block the retirement of the nickname by the State Board of Higher Education. In order to keep the name, the university requires the approval of both of the state's Sioux tribes by November 30, 2010. Nickname supporters have submitted a petition with 1,0004 signatures to qualify a measure for the ballot.[2][3]
