North Dakota bar admits new lawyers
September 28, 2012
North Dakota: This month the North Dakota Bar admitted 68 members, officially welcoming a new crop of lawyers to the state. This is an increase from 2011, when 55 lawyers passed the bar exam.[1] While much of the country is graduating more lawyers than has positions for them, North Dakota remains an exception. In his welcome, Chief Justice Gerald VandeWalle said:
“ | Our lawyers are busy. While I am grateful for that fact, I ask you to remember the tenets of the pledge and the oath you have just taken and to resist temptation to the shortcuts that might lead to disrespect and dishonor of those principles."[2] [3] | ” |
The need for lawyers in North Dakota is surprising compared with the economic climate across the nation. However, the western region of the state is prospering as a result of an oil boom. This summer, Chief Justice VandeWalle even petitioned the North Dakota Legislature for more judgeships to keep up with the caseloads.[4]
