Four of the seven seats on the North East Independent School District board of trustees were up for general election on May 7, 2016. Incumbent Sandy Hughey ran against challengers Chris Herring and Melissa Martinez White for the District 1 seat. District 5 incumbent Shannon Grona faced challenger Roger Fisher. Incumbent Jim Wheat and newcomer Tony Jaso ran unopposed for the District 4 and 6 seats, respectively.[1][2] Due to lack of opposition the races in Districts 4 and 6 were canceled. Wheat and Jaso were both automatically elected. Hughey defeated Herring in her re-election bid in District 1 while Grona defeated Fisher in District 5.[3]

Voter and candidate information
The North East Independent Board of Trustees consists of seven members elected by district to four-year terms.[2] Seats are up for election on a staggered basis every even-numbered year in May. The general election for the Place 1, 4, 5, and 6 seats was held on May 7, 2016. There is no primary election.[4] The Place 2, 3, and 7 seats were on the ballot in 2014.
To get on the ballot, candidates had to file with the school district by February 19, 2016.[4] Candidates had to be at least 18 years old, U.S. citizens and residents of the district for six months prior to the last date on which the candidate could file to be listed on the ballot.[5]
