Nute Gunray was viceroy of the Trade Federation, an organization which controlled a majority of interstellar shipping routes throughout the Rim territories in a galaxy far, far away.[1] He was an associate of the Sith lord Darth Sidious, as well as Count Dooku, leader of the Confederacy of Independent Systems—sometimes referred to as the Separatist Alliance.
Career
Nute Gunray was a Neimodian who served as viceroy of the Trade Federation, an organization which controlled a majority of interstellar shipping routes throughout the Rim territories in a galaxy far, far away.[1] He conspired with the Sith lord Darth Sidious to launch a blockade and subsequent invasion of Naboo. After the invasion, he attempted to force then-Queen of Naboo Padme Amidala to sign a treaty that would legitimize the occupation. Amidala escaped, however, and returned to Naboo with forces from the Galactic Republic including Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi. Gunray was arrested, but still had not been convicted after four trials in the Supreme Court of the Galactic Republic.[2] Naboo Governor Sio Bubble said of the inability to convict Gunray, "It's outrageous! After four trials in the Supreme Court, Nute Gunray is still the viceroy of the Trade Federation! I feel the Senate is powerless to resolve this crisis."[3] He later hired bounty hunter Jango Fett to kill Amidala, who subcontracted the job to bounty hunter Zam Wessell. Gunray was later a witness to an attempted execution of Queen Amidala on the planet Geonosis.
The Clone Wars
After the start of the Clone Wars, Nute Gunray secretly aligned with Count Dooku to form the Confederacy of Independent Systems, also known as the Separatist Alliance, though Trade Federation representatives in the Senate denied this.[1] He was later named leader of the Separatist Council.[2] He was captured by Republic forces on the planet Rodia, but was rescued during his transport on a Republic cruiser.
As a result of the death of Count Dooku, just before the Battle of Utapau, Gunray contacted Sith lord Darth Sidious seeking refuge. Sidious advised Gunray that he and the other Separatist leaders should go to the Mustafar system. He and the other Separatist leaders were murdered on Mustafar by an Imperial agent working for Emperor Palpatine.
