Obama nominates three to federal district court seats

Washington, D.C. On March 2, 2011, President Barack Obama submitted three more nominations to the senate, appointing Nancy Torresen to a seat at the District of Maine, Nannette Brown to a seat at the Eastern District of Louisiana and Wilma Lewis to the United States District Court for the U.S. Virgin Islands. Obama said of the nominations, “I am proud to nominate these three outstanding candidates to serve on the United States District Court bench. They all have long and distinguished records of service, and I am confident they will serve on the federal bench with distinction.”[1] Obama's nomination targets two struggling districts. The Eastern District of Louisiana's current vacancy level is set at yellow, with two vacancies while the District of Maine is set at orange and is currently missing one of its three total positions.
District of Maine
President Obama nominated Nancy Torresen, the current Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Maine, to the United States District Court for the District of Maine. Torresen attended Hope College and graduated with an B.A. in 1981. Torresen received a J.D. from University of Michigan Law School in 1987.[1]
Eastern District of Louisiana
President Obama nominated Nannette Brown, the current City Attorney for the City of New Orleans, to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. Brown attended University of Southwestern Louisiana (now University of Louisiana at Lafayette) and graduated with an B.A. in 1985. Brown received a J.D. from Tulane Law School in 1988 and her LL.M. in Energy and Environment from Tulane in 1998.[1]
U.S. Virgin Islands
President Obama nominated Wilma Lewis, the current Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management at the United States Department of the Interior, for a seat on the United States District Court for the U.S. Virgin Islands. Lewis attended Swarthmore College and graduated with an B.A. in 1978. Lewis received a J.D. from Harvard Law in 1981.[1]
