Occupy Providence case comes before the Rhode Island Supreme Court
October 26, 2011
Rhode Island: Providence Mayor Angel Taveras is intent on evicting the members of Occupy Providence from Burnside Park. Tavaras has suggested that the eviction will proceed in a similar fashion to the "Tent City" evictions that occurred a few years back. That case is still working its way through the court system because of a procedural mistake made by a lower court in serving the eviction notice. The Mayor has stressed that he will “make sure there is plenty of advance notice and plenty of due process. They are peaceful people. They really want to make a point and that is what they have been doing. However, we can’t have them staying in the park indefinitely and I think most reasonable people understand that."[1] The protesters will still be able to occupy the park during the day but will not be allowed to camp out over night any more. Tavaras also said that he plans to visit Occupy Providence's General Assembly meeting, and that he finds Occupy Providence to be '"an amazing grassroots movement" that has brought attention to many important issues.'[1]
