Primary: A primary election is an election in which registered voters select a candidate that they believe should be a political party's candidate for elected office to run in the general election. They are also used to choose convention delegates and party leaders. Primaries are state-level and local-level elections that take place prior to a general election. Ohio law provides for closed primaries, meaning a voter to be affiliated with a party to vote in that party's primary. However a voter of any affiliation can choose the ballot they would like to vote on the day of the primary and their choice may be regarded as registration with that party.[6][7]

For information about which offices are nominated via primary election, see this article.

Incumbent: Incumbent John Boehner (R) announced his resignation, effective October 31, 2015. A special election was held on June 7, 2016, to fill his seat for the remainder of the 114th Congress.[8] Warren Davidson was the incumbent heading into the general election.

Special election primary: Scheduled for March 15, 2016, the primary date for the special election coincided with the primary date for the 8th Congressional District general election and the presidential primary.

Endorsements

Bill Beagle

  • Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio, District 10): "[Beagle] has done a great job in the state Senate and he has really worked on a regional basis. He sees himself as an economic development partner for the entire region. His experience at the state level would be very helpful here in Congress. He has been part of the Ohio turn around and I’m very impressed that he’s not just coming with local government experience. He has got regional experience.”[14]

Warren Davidson

  • Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio, District 4) - "This is the kind of guy we need in Washington. He's going to come in there and stand firm. To me, that's the most important thing."[15]
