The Ohio "Fresh Start" Act was an initiated state statute that did not make the Ohio ballot on November 8, 2016.

The measure would have allowed people convicted of marijuana-related offenses to expunge their criminal records if the state passes laws that make those offenses no longer illegal.[1]

Although petitioners submitted enough signatures to put the measure before the Ohio General Assembly, they decided in January 2016 to drop the measure.

Petitioners needed to submit 1,000 signatures with the initial petition filing. The attorney general's office received the petition on June 24, 2015, and certified the measure on July 6, 2015. The Ohio Ballot Board approved the amendment on July 15, 2015.[1][3][4]

Supporters needed to collect 91,677 signatures to send the measure to the Ohio General Assembly. The secretary of state's office confirmed that ResponsibleOhio submitted 117,418 valid signatures.[5]

On January 14, 2016, ResponsibleOhio announced they were ending efforts to place the measure on the ballot. "We spent a lot of money, a lot of time, and we heard what the public said. ResponsibleOhio is not a part of this; it doesn't exist. Fresh Start is not existing anymore," said ResponsibleOhio founder Jimmy Gould.[6]
