Ohio Veterans Constitutional Amendment (2008) or Senate Joint Resolution (SJR) 5 was a legislative referral that would have provided for compensation of $100 for each month served by veterans in the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, or Iraq, up to $1,000, and monthly compensation of $50 for those serving elsewhere during these conflicts, up to $500. Family members of those killed in action would have received $5,000 in addition to any other allowable compensation.[1]
Proponents
Ohio Treasurer Richard Cordray and Thomas Germano, an Iraq war veteran, asked the legislature to put the measure on the ballot in November 2007. It was sponsored by State Sen. Timothy Grendell.[2]
Status
This measure received the unanimous support of the Senate. The Ohio House rejected the measure in July 2008, stating that they were opposed to taking on the debt the measure would require.[3]
Support
Commander Don Jeffrey wrote a letter of support for the amendment, which was posted by MansfieldNewsJournal.com, where he expressed his hopes for the measure to be placed on the November 2008 ballot. He added that "We owe Ohio's veterans a debt of gratitude. They deserve a modest service bonus in recognition of their service and sacrifice."[2]
