Ohio to mail absentee applications to all voters

COLUMBUS, Ohio: Leading up to the November 6 general election, the Ohio Secretary of State's office will mail absentee ballot applications to all registered voters in the state. Just under 8 million Ohioans were registered to vote in the primary election. During the last presidential election year, 2008, around 8.3 million Ohioans registered to vote in the general election. The mailing is expected to cost the state $2 to $3 million. The state will use federal "Help America Vote Act" funds to pay for the initiative. However, the program could increase costs to municipalities who will bear the responsibility of mailing the ballots themselves.

The mailing will take place in two installments. The first will reach voters just after Labor Day (September 3, 2012) and be sent to all those registered to voter by July 30, 2012. For those who register to vote after July 30, a second installment will be sent during the first week of October. Ohio's absentee voting period begins 35 days prior to the general election on October 2, 2012.
