There was not a Oklahoma County Sales Tax Increase on the May 11 ballot in Oklahoma County.
The county is in need of either a new jail or large renovations to the existing one. The county commission is debating on the issue of whether or not they should increase the county sales tax in order to help pay for the bonds they would sell to fund the renovation or building of the new jail. Due to a report made by the U.S. Justice Department, the county must renovate or build a new jail within four years in order to meet the failing standards at the current jail. A sales tax was considered the best option because it would spread the tax burden out more than if a property tax were issued.[1]
