Jurisdiction
This court holds the following jurisdiction:[1]
| “ | The State shall be divided by the Legislature into judicial districts, each consisting of an entire county or of contiguous counties. There shall be one District Court for each judicial district, which shall have such number of District Judges, Associate District Judges and Special Judges as may be prescribed by statute. The District Court shall have unlimited original jurisdiction of all justiciable matters, except as otherwise provided in this Article, and such powers of review of administrative action as may be provided by statute. Existing electing districts for all who are or who become District Judges and Associate District Judges under the terms of this Article shall remain as they are constituted for the offices formerly held by such persons on the effective date of this Article, until changed by statute. The Legislature may at any time delegate authority to the Supreme Court to designate by court rule the division of the State into districts and the number of judges.[2] | ” |
Selection method

The 75 judges of the Oklahoma District Courts are chosen in nonpartisan elections. They serve four-year terms, after which they must run for re-election if they wish to continue serving.[3]
The chief judge of each district court is selected by vote of the other judges. He or she serves in that capacity for a one-year term.[3]
Qualifications
To serve on this court, a judge must be:[3]
- a qualified voter in his or her district for at least one year; and
- licensed to practice for at least four years (or have four years of service as a judge of a court of record).

Oklahoma is one of seven states that use nonpartisan elections to initially select judges and then use retention elections to determine whether judges should remain on the bench. To read more about how states use judicial elections to select judges across the country, click here.
Primary election
Judges of the district courts run in nonpartisan elections after four-year terms. If more than two candidates file for one seat, they will compete in a primary election. If one candidate receives a majority of the votes in the primary election, that candidate is elected and does not need to run in the general election. If no one receives a majority of the votes, the two candidates with the most votes will compete against each other in the general election.[4]
General election
If two candidates are competing for one district court seat, their names will appear on the ballot for the general election. Unopposed candidates do not appear on the ballot.[5]
