Olivia Dowler (she/her) is from Weirton, WV. She is 22 years old and graduated from Weir High School in 2020. Now, she is finishing up her degree at West Virginia University in History, Spanish, and Philosophy and graduating in early May 2024. She is also a first-generation college student. After a gap year or two, she plans to go to law school with the aspirations of becoming a public defender.
  • Stronger Workers: Supporting West Virginia workers (such as our teachers, steelworkers, coal miners, first responders, etc.) is a necessity. These people and their families deserve to receive support and respect from the legislature.
  • Fuller Plates: Alleviating food insecurity is needed to allow people to thrive in all other areas of their lives. The removal of grocery stores in lower socioeconomic regions create many barriers to access to fresh foods and proper nutrition.
  • Safer Communities: Any time that you see the words "gun owner," you should see another word proceeding it: "responsible." Promoting gun safety (such as proper storage techniques) is vital for all of our futures. Every individual deserves to feel safe in their community.
Some areas of public policy that I am personally passionate about include criminal justice, gender equity, education, civil rights, environmental, and healthcare.
I would like to leave a legacy of truly amplifying the voices of my constituents, especially those of women and young people (who are largely underrepresented in the WV legislature).
The first major historical event that happened in my lifetime that I can remember (and could grasp the importance of) was the reelection of President Barack Obama. I was eleven years old.
My favorite book is Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom. It has a quote that I try to live my life by, "The way you get meaning into your life is to devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to something that gives you purpose and meaning."
One of our state's greatest challenges now that I believe will continue over the next decade is the declining population, especially that of young people.
Yes! It is always beneficial to hear other viewpoints, especially those that may come from people with different identities than myself. I want to be sure that I am representing all of my constituents, not just those that look like me.
Some legislators in West Virginia I've looked up to and hope to model myself after are Joey Garcia, Kayla Young, Danielle Walker, and Mike Caputo.
I am interested in the Jails and Prison committee and the education committee.
