2014

Torres highlighted the following issues on his campaign website:

SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, & MATH (STEM)

According to a 2013 report by the National Math and Science Initiative, 42 percent of fourth grade students and 35 percent of eighth grade students performed at or above the proficient level in mathematics. Our current school board is tackling the crisis by investing in STEM education for our students. Many of our FMSD schools have a specific focus on STEM. This is why our district institutions are rapidly improving every year. I will ensure that FMSD continues to focus and invest in STEM curriculum for students and professional development for teachers. Students must be exposed to technology at a young age in order to develop a strong foundation to be ready for today and tomorrow’s technology and globalized economy.

CLOSING THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP
In the past seven years the achievement gap between Latino 4th and 8th grade students in mathematics and reading was between 21 and 26 points when compared to their non-Latino peers. According to a report published by the National Center for Education Statistics. On the school board, I will work to strengthen our private/public partnerships to address this matter. By investing in quality preparation for teachers, creating opportunities for parental involvement and having a proactive administration, we will ensure that we will be held accountable for eliminating the achievement gap in our district.

ENDING ILLITERACY IN OUR SCHOOLS
Anne E. Casey Foundation released the alarming report, "Double Jeopardy” linking high school dropout rates with early children illiteracy. They concluded that children who were poor, lived in poverty and are underperforming in school are more likely to drop out of high school. Many of our FMSD students are middle to low income and as a result are endanger of becoming a horrible statistic. As a former educator and current nonprofit executive, I have the experience to offer solutions with our illiteracy crisis. As a school board member, I will work with our Board to invest in early childhood education, will collaborate with our federal and state elected officials to create public policies to help end illiteracy and assist parents to be actively engaged in their child's education.[1]
