Willabus' campaign website stated the following:
Issues
I believe government officials should be transparent and accountable. I will work for YOU! And I'll focus on economic development, strengthening communities and schools, improving infrastructure and being as responsive as I possibly can. I'm going to show up to neighborhood meetings and hear what you care about and then ACT on it! This will be my full time job.
Economic Development
We have to focus on bringing more shops, grocery stores and restaurants to East and South DeKalb. Much of the area is a food desert -- meaning there's no place nearby to buy fresh fruits, vegetables or healthy food. That's number one. Setting up farmer's markets in existing brick and mortar buildings owned by DeKalb County and finding other small businesses to fill out the space. There are some new developments that are mixed use but don't include food options. The community and the commissioners must pressure these developers to bring more of what DeKalb NEEDS to the area. No more gas stations, liquor stores, pawn shops and Dollar Stores. Current businesses need to be supported to make sure they thrive. Working with Decide DeKalb to make sure diverse housing is being built where new developments are located is important too.. and to share that information with the community as it happens. And survey the community to see what they want in their community. We've heard from neighbors they'd like a UPS store or a vet clinic .. a coffee shop or a nail salon. We need to do our best to bring small biz and the specific types of businesses the community wants -- so the business will be sure to thrive and the community will invest and patronize the shops.
Improve Infrastructure
We need to focus on repaving as many streets as possible, and if they can't be paved, patch them and REPAINT lines. DeKalb county bought it's own line painter because there was such great need for one. We need to put it to use immediately on streets that are unsafe to travel on because they're missing lines. We need to add street lighting and be clear with the community about the timeline and plan for replacing worn out water pipes, storm drains and sewers.
No Data Centers
I have been to the meetings. I have listened to the community. They have spoken and they do not want data centers. Especially in residential areas or near parks or forests or schools. We need a strong ordinance that requires a special land use permit (SLUP) for every proposed building and every building under redevelopment. We don't know enough about the environmental impacts of these massive data centers, but it's clear they will use A LOT of water and energy, and with our ancient infrastructure that is undergoing long-overdue improvement, our county cannot support a large scale data center now.
Keep Schools Open & Strong
I will work with the community and the school board to fight to keep as many schools open as possible. We need to know the exact number of students needed to keep each school open. We need to know the exact amount of housing needed to provide families a place to live to attend the school, and then we need to work to revitalize neighborhoods with different kinds of housing, so our seniors can downsize and remain in the community and younger families can buy existing homes. It's going to take all of us working together to create the change we need to save these schools. I believe that strong schools bring families and drive economic development in the county. If we don't protect our school system and make it the best it can be, we ALL lose.
Transportation Options
MARTA is closing bus stops in South and East DeKalb. The promised expansion we've been paying the penny tax on for decades has not materialized. We need to push MARTA to provide bus rapid transit options on I-20 and I-285. Add an HOV/Bus lane so people can get from the South to the nearest bus or rail line to get to the airport or downtown fast. We've paid for it, we need to see a complete change in what's provided. It's beyond time!
