Some states allow voters to register to vote using an online system, instead of filling out a paper-based form. As of March 2026, 42 states, and Washington, D.C. allowed online voter registration.
Online registration by state
As of March 2026, 42 states and Washington, D.C., allowed online voter registration.[1] All 42 states, plus D.C., require that individuals who wish to register to vote online have a driver's license, ID card, or Social Security number. Some states require individuals to provide both their driver's license or ID card number and their Social Security number to register to vote online. If a person does not have a driver's license, an ID card, and a Social Security number, they generally must print out and mail a voter registration form or register to vote using a different method.
