June 3 Election Review |
---|
Santa Fe, New Mexico:
One contested incumbent loses, two former New Mexico Senators win and three different offices were up for election in the four contested Democratic primaries that took place on June 3, 2014. Primary voters decided on their candidates in the four contested Democratic races for Governor, Treasurer and Public Regulation Commissioners.
Public Regulation Commissioner Theresa Becenti-Aguilar lost in the primary for her district 4 seat. She was the only contested incumbent in the Democratic primaries. The only other office up for election with a Democratic incumbent was the Treasurer of New Mexico where incumbent James B. Lewis was term limited from seeking re-election. No Republican primaries were contested.
Former New Mexico Senators Tim Eichenberg and Lynda Lovejoy won their state executive primary elections yesterday. Eichenberg will go on to face Rick Lopez in the race for treasurer. Lovejoy stands uncontested for the general election as of June 4, but could face competition on November 4, if independent candidates file to meet the June 25th state deadline.[1]

Current Attorney General Gary King won the Democratic primary on June 3, and will face incumbent Republican Susana Martinez in the general election. Martinez was uncontested in the Republican primary.[1]
Going into the primary election on June 3rd, limited polling available matched Susana Martinez against different potential Democratic candidates. King posted the highest numbers against Martinez of all candidates polled but, at the closest, King polled at least 5 points behind, still outside the margin of error.
