Four of the seven seats on the Onslow County Schools school board were up for at-large general election on March 15, 2016. Three candidates—Gene Flanagan, Jonathan Merritt, and Dawnna Turner—challenged incumbents Earl Taylor, Pamela Thomas, and Paul Wiggins in their re-election bids.[1] All incumbents secured re-election and were joined in their victory by a single newcomer: Jonathan Merritt.
Incumbent Jeffery Brown did not file to seek re-election, guaranteeing that at least one new member would join the board in 2016.

Voter and candidate information
The Onslow County school board consists of seven members elected at large to four-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election was March 15, 2016. In North Carolina, a runoff is not required in any case unless the second-highest vote recipient calls for one.[2] Four of the board's seats were up for election in 2016.
Candidates began to file affidavits of candidacy on December 1, 2015. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was December 21, 2015.[3]

School board candidates
Candidates received a total of $8,170.24 and spent a total of $6,707.81 as of March 22, 2016, according to the Onslow County Board of Elections.[4]
School board candidates in North Carolina are required to file campaign finance reports to their county's board of elections unless the candidate:
(1) Does not receive more than one thousand dollars ($1,000) in contributions, and
(2) Does not receive more than one thousand dollars ($1,000) in loans, and
(3) Does not spend more than one thousand dollars ($1,000).[5]
The first quarter campaign finance deadline was on March 7, 2016.

. Onslow County Schools is located in Onslow County, North Carolina.. The county seat is Jacksonville. Onslow County was home to an estimated 187,589 residents in 2014, according to the United States Census Bureau.[6] The district was the 13th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 25,161 students.[7]
Demographics
Onslow County underperformed in comparison to North Carolina as a whole in terms of higher education achievement from 2009 to 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 18.0 percent of Onslow County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 27.3 percent for the state. The median household income in the county was $45,450 compared to $46,334 for the state as a whole. The poverty rate in the county was 15.2 percent compared to 17.5 percent for the entire state.[6]
