Oregon Supreme Court Primary draws nearer

Oregon: The filing period for the Oregon Judicial Elections has closed and the May 15th Primary draws near. There are a total of five candidates running for election to the Oregon Supreme Court, with two unopposed. Only one of those candidates is an incumbent, the other four will run for two seats left open by retiring Judges Robert Durham and Paul DeMuniz.


The races

  • Position 6: The only incumbent of the 2012 race, Virginia Linder, will be running unopposed for re-election.[3]

The candidates

  • David V. Brewer currently serves as chief justice of the Oregon Court of Appeals. He joined the court in 1999, was retained in 2000 and 2006 and became chief judge on November 1, 2004.[4][5] Brewer began his legal career in 1977, practicing civil litigation, family, commercial, probate and real property law in Eugene, Oregon. In 1993, he became a judge on the Lane County Circuit Court. He held this position until 1999, when he joined the Court of Appeals. He received his B.A. degree in economics from California State University at Sonoma in 1974 and his J.D. degree from the University of Oregon School of Law in 1977.[6] He is running unopposed for election to Position 2.
  • Richard C. Baldwin is a judge on the Multnomah County Circuit Court. He began his career in 1977 when he worked as a Staff Attorney for Multnomah County Legal Aid. In 1981 he began practice as a private attorney. In 1983 he began work as a partner with Baldwin & Br schetto. in 1991 Baldwin moved on to become the Litigation Director for Multnomah County Legal Aid. From 1996 to 2000 he served as the Director of the Oregon Law Center. In March 2001 he was appointed by Gov Kitzhaber to Multnomah County Circuit Court. Baldwin earned his B.A. in philosophy from San Jose State University and his J.D. from Northwestern School of Law at Lewis & Clark College.[7] He will compete in the May 15th primary for Position 3.
  • Nena Cook is the only non-judge running for the Oregon Supreme Court. She currently works as an attorney for Sussman Shank LLP and sometimes as a Pro Tempore (substitute) Circuit Court Judge. Her legal career began in 1990 when she worked as a Law Clerk for the Marion County District Attorney Office. In 1991 she began practicing as an attorney. Cook earned a B.A. in philosophy from Gonzaga University, an MBA from Portland State University and a J.D. from Willamette University College of Law.[7] She will compete in the May 15th primary for Position 3.
  • Timothy Sercombe has served as a judge on the Oregon Court of Appeals since 2007.[6] His legal career began in 1971 when he worked as a Paralegal for Sidley & Austin in Chicago, IL. In 1976 and 1977 he worked as a Law Clerk to Oregon Supreme Court Justices Kenneth O'Connell and Berkeley Lent. From 1977 to 1991 he was a Shareholder/Associate with Harrang, Long, Gary & Rudnick in Eugene OR. From 1991 to 2007 he was a Partner/Of Counsel with Kirkpatrick & Lockhart Preston Gates Ellis in Portland OR. He received his B.A. in political science from Northwestern University and his J.D. degree from the University of Oregon School of Law in 1976.[6][7] He will compete in the May 15th primary for Position 3.
  • Virginia Linder is an Associate Justice elected to the Supreme Court on November 7, 2006.[8][9] She has served a variety of positions in the Oregon Department of Justice. After receiving her law degree, she was Assistant Attorney General in the Appellate Division until 1983. From there she became Attorney-in-Charge of the Education Section, where she stayed for two years. Next, she was Assistant Solicitor General, until being elevated to Solicitor General in 1986. Linder served in this capacity until her appointment to the Oregon Court of Appeals in 1997, by then-Gov. John Kitzhaber.[10] Linder received her B.A. in political science from Southern Oregon State College in 1975 and her J.D. from Williamette University College of Law in 1980.[6] She is running for re-election to Position 6.
