Orinda Measure R was on the ballot as a referral in Orinda on November 3, 2020. It was approved.

A “yes” vote supported authorizing an increase to the current sales tax from 0.5% to 1% for 20 years generating an estimated $2.4 million per year for essential services including wildfire prevention, disaster preparedness, storm drain repair and street maintenance, thereby increasing the total sales tax rate in Orinda from 8.75% to 9.25%.

A “no” vote opposed authorizing an increase to the current sales tax from 0.5% to 1% for 20 years generating an estimated $2.4 million per year for essential services including wildfire prevention, disaster preparedness, storm drain repair and street maintenance, thereby leaving the existing total sales tax rate in Orinda at 8.75% until 2023.


A simple majority was required for the approval of Measure R.

Ballot title

The ballot title for Measure R was as follows:

To help maintain and enhance essential City services, including wildfire risk reduction throughout Orinda, preparation for emergencies and disasters, repair of public storm drains, continued public street maintenance, and other city services, shall the City of Orinda increase its existing one-half cent sales tax to one cent, which would generate approximately $2.4 million annually for a period of twenty years, with financial audits, public review of all expenditures, and a citizens’ oversight committee?
