Due to one unopposed seat and one open seat, the 2016 Palm Springs Unified Board of Education race was guaranteed to keep one incumbent on the board and add one new member. The 2016 election was the first time the district had an unopposed seat in recent years. No seats were unopposed in 2010, 2012, or 2014. The fact that the one incumbent who ran for re-election won, however, maintained a district trend. In 2010, 2012, and 2014, every incumbent who ran to retain his or her seat won an additional term. The newcomers who were elected to the board in those years won open seats, as the new member elected in 2016 did.
