General: She defeated Sheila Acosta in the general election on November 4, 2014, receiving 54.9 percent of the vote.[1][2][3]

Derbyshire ran for re-election to the Harris County Criminal Court at Law. She defeated Democrat Sheila Acosta in the general election, winning 56.4% of the vote.[4]

Education

Derbyshire earned her J.D. from the South Texas College of Law in 1982.[5]

Career

Prior to her judicial election in 1998, Derbyshire was a lawyer in private practice. She previously worked as a federal prosecutor for the Southern District of Texas and a chief prosecutor for the Harris County District Attorney's Office.[6]

Judges of the county courts are elected in partisan elections by the county they serve and serve four-year terms, with vacancies filled by a vote of the county commissioners.[7]

Qualifications
To serve on a county court, a judge must:[7]

  • be at least 25 years old;
  • be a resident of his or her respective county for at least two years; and
  • have practiced law or served as a judge for at least four years preceding the election.
