Four seats were up for election on the Parkland School Board. Barry Long, Robert M. Cohen, Mark A. Hanichak and David J. Hein won election to the board on November 5, 2013. Voters chose Hein to replace longtime member Jayne Bartlett.[1]

Parkland School District serves K-12 students in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Allentown is the county seat of Lehigh County, which is located in eastern Pennsylvania. The population of Allentown is 118,974 according to the 2010 Census[2]
Demographics
Allentown lagged behind state averages for educational achievement and median household income in the 2010 U.S. Census. According to the 2010 Census, the percentage of residents with a high school degree (75.2%) is lower than the state of Pennsylvania (87.9%). The percentage of residents over 25 with a bachelor's degree or higher is also lower in Allentown (16.4%) compared to the state overall (26.7%). The median household income in Allentown is $35,737 compared to Pennsylvania's statewide median of $51,651.[2]

Method of board member selection
The Parkland School Board consists of nine members who are elected at-large to four-year terms. There was a primary on May 21, 2013 and the general election was held on November 5, 2013. Four seats were on the ballot in 2013 and five seats will be up for election on November 3, 2015.
Candidates running in the May primary were required to file nominating petitions with the Lehigh County Elections Department by March 12, 2013. The last day for candidates nominated in the primary to withdraw from the ballot was August 12, 2013. Voters could register for the general election through October 7, 2013. The Board of Elections allowed voters to request civilian absentee ballots until October 29, 2013 and accepted these ballots until November 1, 2013.[4]

Additional elections on the ballot
The Parkland School Board elections shared the ballot with other local and county elections. Voters in Allentown submitted ballots for Mayor and five seats on the City Council. The ballot also included races for Lehigh County Executive and five seats on the County Commission. Voters also filled four Magisterial District Judges and a Judge of the Superior Court.[6]
