My name is Pat Carpio-Aguilar, I am a teacher of English and Spanish. I have been in education for over 40 years, and I have experience as a school administrator. Now, I'm running for the Fremont Union High School Board, as the first Governing Board member in their newly created North Sunnyvale Trustee Area 2. I'm excited to represent our district and bring my background as a teacher and as an advocate to focus on the needs of the students and their families. Representation matters and it makes a difference.
  • I want to elevate student voices in our board room discussions and policy sessions because I believe in listening to everybody who is involved in education. Students are an integral part of the decision-making process, and their voices should be heard.
  • I want to promote safety and a sense of belonging for ALL students so they can reach their unique potential and together we can build our community's future. When students feel safe and valued at school they can focus on the true purpose of education, which is learning, finding themselves and their self-worth.
  • I want to remove all barriers and frictions so that each student can thrive at school, regardless of their family income level or their home language. We live in a community with a rich tapestry of backgrounds, cultural heritage, and languages. ALL of these should be welcomed, respected, and acknowledged. Appropriate access and clear communication about district policies, timelines, and procedures should be available in a format that welcomes all.
As teacher of both English and Spanish, I realize the impact of communication and how it influences our lives and daily decisions. One aspect of policy that I am passionate about is accessibility of information for all parents and students, in their preferred language. When information is communicated in a means and format that speaks to our heart, our brain follows.
I look up to my "Abuelita". She taught me to always be kind through my actions and my words. Her examples were making sure that nobody ever went hungry, and that their dignity was protected and respected when receiving help. She was strong, hardworking and very fair. I strive to do justice to my "Abuelita's" memory every day.
The constituents for a Governing Board member are the students themselves, and their parents or caregivers. To the students, the Trustees owe the time and consideration to feel and be heard and acknowledged, regardless of home language, or the family income level. To the parents/caregivers the Board Trustees are responsible for addressing the needs or concerns that are brought to their attention. The President of the Board is accountable for responding in a timely and efficient manner to any inquiries or concerns that are brought forth.
Safety in schools starts with everyone feeling welcomed and accepted as they are. Students thrive in a judgement free space. So, schools should promote acceptance and respect for all.
Any bullying behaviors should be addressed to meet the needs of the individual as well as the group. Behavior is communication, and when a student or a group of students are demonstrating risky or bullying behaviors, they need the intervention from adults to guide them and help them express their social-emotional needs in an appropriate manner.

The ideal learning environment for students is one where they feel engaged with the subject matter, and where all the resources are available for them to construct their own knowledge. There should also be a spark of joy in the learning process so that students can experience school as a place that fulfills their human needs. While learning, students should be guaranteed both physical and emotional safety in order to focus on the content and the concepts they are learning.
