I’m Pat Tarzwell I’ve been married to my wife Sandy for 47 years. We have 3 children and 5 grandchildren. I love sailing, scuba diving, woodworking, audio books and am passionate about US history. In fact, I taught the Constitution and Declaration of Independence for two years. I own a small manufacturing business for over 33 years, that deals in microelectronics. Predominately, we create the means to test medical electronics. I am an innovator with 5 patents to my name, demonstrating my ability to solve difficult problems and think “outside the box”. Growth is coming to Mason County. We need to be proactive to the coming growth rather than reacting. As a county commissioner I will work with local business and developers on effective strategies for this growth while understanding that the role of government is to protect and maintain individual rights. I understand that I work for the people of my county. I believe I can take the skills I have learned over the last 33 years in business to bring a fresh new approach to tackling the problem our community faces. And I look forward to taking on this challenge for the people of this county.
  • Fiscal responsibility: As commissioners we must understand that keeping a tight reign of the finances of the county budget is key. The money we spend is not ours to do as we wish, it belongs to the citizens, we are only stewards of it. Our community has many of the same problems as larger urban communities but with limited resources to tackle those issues. Families are struggling with the rising cost of gas, food utilities and housing. Creating a sustainable budget and keeping taxes low is one of my top priorities to ease the burden at their kitchen table.
  • Public safety: The primary object of all government is to protect and maintain individual rights. The best way to do that is with a functioning justice system. It starts with law enforcement, and making sure they have the manpower to do their job effectively, followed by enough attorneys to protect civil rights, and prosecute crimes in a timely fashion, then sufficient options to address the outcomes, through treatment or incarceration as needed. The three legs of this stool, require a balanced approach to stand and be effective.
  • Economic Development: To encourage economic growth, I will support policies that attract businesses and development projects, understanding that a robust economy benefits the entire community. I will advocate for zoning policies that allow for flexibility and adaptability, enabling communities to respond to changing economic conditions and opportunities without being constrained by overly rigid regulations. Overall, I tend to prioritize individual freedoms, economic growth and local autonomy in planning and zoning matter, with a cautious approach to government regulations.
When we talk about affordable housing, most people mean small or tiny homes are the only answer. Let’s set the free market free again and remove the barriers to housing options. We need to build homes in every price range, from large to tiny homes and everything in between. It is really simple, when government chokes off supply while demand is high, prices must sky rocket. Find a way to make it easier to bring in more construction of new homes at every price range and as people do increasingly well, they will move up into better homes leaving space for new home buyers or apartment dwellers to buy the home that became vacant, thereby allowing younger people just starting out to buy a home and start building wealth on their own.
Characteristics and principles that are most important to me are honesty, integrity, transparency, and the understanding that as a public servant, I work for the people of my county. I believe that any money that the government has, it must take from someone else first, so it must be spent wisely and for the good of all not just a few.
I believe as a leader it is our job to pave a path for a brighter future for Mason County, determine the obstacles and speed bumps that stand in the way of achieving those goals, and create a strategy to overcome those while understanding that the role of government is to protect and maintain individual rights. Growth is coming to Mason County, and that is a very good thing. We need to be proactive to the coming growth rather than reacting. Simply put, it is cheaper to maintain the roads than to do major repairs while under traffic loads. Sewers are easier to put in before the need arises rather than afterwards. As a county commissioner I will work with local business and developers on effective strategies for this growth. Also, we need to keep a close watch on the money entrusted to us by the tax payers.
Washington State Party Chair Representative Jim Walsh, Representatives Dan Griffey and Travis Couture, The Republican Women of Mason County.
The money we are entrusted with does not belong to us, it came from the taxpayers and they should know what is being done with their money. Commissioners are given the responsibility to oversee large chunks of money and making sure it is taken care of and spent as efficiently as possible are key to good governance. Holding us accountable with financial transparency is a good way to keep the system working smoothly and efficiently.
