Noteworthy events

Resigned after being convicted of falsifying tax returns and making false statements

On April 29, 2021, Thompson was charged with five counts of filing false tax returns and two counts of lying to Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) officials about making payments toward loans he had received from Washington Federal Bank for Savings. The indictment said Thompson received $219,000 in loans from the bank between 2011 and 2014. When federal regulators shut down the bank in 2017, the FDIC attempted to collect the debt Thompson owed to the bank. According to the indictment, Thompson said he owed only $110,000 on the loan despite making only one payment and not paying the interest. He was also accused of falsely accounting for mortgage interest payments on his tax returns between the years 2013 and 2017.[5]

In a statement, Thompson said, “I did not commit any crime, I am innocent, and I will prove it at trial... The charges in the indictment do not relate in any way to my public service or to my professional life. I remain 100 percent dedicated to serving the people of Chicago to the best of my ability.” [6]

Thompson pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on May 13, 2021.[7]

On February 14, 2022, a jury found Thompson guilty of filing false tax returns and making false statements to federal authorities. According to WBEZ Chicago, "Thompson did not testify and hasn’t spoken publicly about the trial, other than a statement he released after the indictment maintaining his innocence."[8] Thompson was forced to immediately resign his post as a result of the conviction.[9]

Thompson was sentenced to four months in prison and a 12-month term of supervised release.[10]
