Thorpe's website highlighted the following campaign themes:
“ | Education
I am a strong supporter of Public Education. The Kansas Constitution is CLEAR that it is the State Government's responsibility to adequately fund Public Education. For years we are argued how much is adequate. That attitude is exactly what's wrong with our legislators. Adequate means the bare minimum allowed. The real issue is where does Education fall in our funding priorities. I say it should top the list. Here are but a few things I would do to help improve our growing Public School system: TENS OF THOUSANDS of Kansans are without medical insurance here in Kansas. With our current KanCare system, those tens of thousands of Kansans make too much money to be in KanCare or do not make enough to get federal tax subsidies to help offset the cost. What they're left with is a choice between "Health Insurance or Paying the Utilities". Expanding Medicaid would not only allow them to afford insurance, it would be a economic boom to our already thriving medical care industry! Expanding Medicaid would also bring much needed dollars to Western Kansas and rural areas struggling to keep their own clinics open. We need to stop the partisan decisions and put #PeopleBeforePolitics! Brownback and his legislative supporters decided last session to experiment with your MEDICARE! They passed the disastrous Health Care Compact into law which would privatize Medicare, the same way KanCare did for Medicaid. Privatizing Medicare would take a "service-based" not-for-profit and transform it into a "profit-driven" business. This would mean life-necessity care would be denied, waiting list grow, and MORE out of pocket expenses for the elderly on a limited income. We SIMPLY cannot allow this to happen! I pledge to work diligently with other legislators to repeal this horrible law and protect the senior citizens of Kansas from meddlesome politicians and their special-interest,think tank, lobbyist friends. Support Wind Energy Our wind-energy programs are WORKING! The energy produced by wind in Kansas is well over double digits and we will have no problem reaching 20% before the end of the decade. That is, if the State continued their support of wind-energy projects. There's growing support to take away regulations and funding to improve this renewable energy source by wealthy PACs and interest groups. At the end of the day, this program provides REAL jobs, with GREAT paying wages for Kansans. I would support continuing our research and development of wind-energy for the JOBS today and CLEAN ENERGY for generations to come! We have experienced our fair share of droughts in the past few decades here in Kansas. Our State Legislators have promised programs and funding to take care of this PUBLIC problem. But the conservative legislators have forgotten about these working programs and instead turned their attention and funding towards creating bad laws and fighting them in court. The issue is sticking with a plan and seeing it completed! I will fight to bring infrastructure dollars into a water plan, and I will fight every single time they try to strip funding! We need this done, and we need to do it NOW! Waiting for another drought will only make the problem worse and the solution much more expensive. And just like our wind-energy program, it will create REAL long-lasting jobs with GREAT wages.[2][3] |
