Patrick Tutwiler
Patrick Tutwiler is the Massachusetts Secretary of Education. Tutwiler assumed office on January 5, 2023. Tutwiler's current term ends on January 7, 2027.
Tutwiler was appointed secretary of education by Governor-elect Maura Healey (D) on December 16, 2022.[1]
Biography
Patrick Tutwiler earned a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Boston College in 2012. He earned a master’s from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. Tutwiler’s career experience includes working as a school superintendent, headmaster at Brighton High School, principal of Wayland High School, and dean of students at Westford High School.[2] Tutwiler was appointed secretary of education by Governor-elect Maura Healey (D) on December 16, 2022. He took office on January 5, 2023.[1]
About the office
The Massachusetts Secretary of Education is a state executive position in the Massachusetts state government. The secretary directs the Executive Office of Education and oversees the state's three education agencies - the Department of Early Education and Care, Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and Department of Higher Education - and the University of Massachusetts.
The Executive Office of Education and the position of secretary of education were proposed by Gov. Deval Patrick (D) and established on March 10, 2008.[3]
