Campaign themes

2014

Southworth's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]

End the Safe Act

  • Excerpt: "The Safe ACT is a flawed piece of feel good legislation that does nothing to stem the tide of illegal guns or punish those that commit a crime or traffic in illegal weapons. Let’s enforce the laws that are on the books and end plea bargaining for crimes committed with a firearm. We need to punish the law breakers not the law abiding citizens that own guns."

Minimum Wage

  • Excerpt: "An increase in the minimum wage is much more than just a specific dollar amount. It means the employee can put a roof over their heads, clothes on their backs and food in their stomachs. From that comes an increase in self esteem, self worth, and pride in the community and participation in their children’s lives (if they have children)."

NO to Common Core

  • Excerpt: "Teachers know best how to teach each assigned classroom mix. Each class is different as are our children. Children need less testing, less comparison to others and more instructional time to reach their full potential. We need to allow teachers to do what they were well trained and certified to do…TEACH."

NO to FRACKING

  • Excerpt: "The health risk of the chemicals put into the ground and transported are enormous. Fracking and the effects of the chemicals used do not stop at property lines. There are no assurances that a neighboring property would not be harmed"

Women’s Equality

  • Excerpt: "I support Women’s Equality Bill in its entirety. We have to ensure those rights are protected. With regards to sexual harassment regulations should apply to all employers. The parts of the legislation pertaining to Domestic Violence are needed now more than ever. Women need to be able to move on from violent situations with some certainty of safety."
