Paul L. Abrams is a federal magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the Central District of California. He was appointed to this position on January 14, 2002, and his term will expire on January 13, 2026.[1] In December 2015, he was nominated by President Barack Obama to serve as an Article III federal judge on the same court.[2] On January 3, 2017, Abrams' nomination was returned to President Obama at the sine die adjournment of the 114th Congress.[3]

Education

Abrams received his B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1979 and his J.D. from the University of California, Boalt Hall School of Law in 1983.[1]

President Obama nominated Abrams to the United States District Court for the Central District of California on December 16, 2015, to serve as an Article III federal judge. Obama stated, regarding Abrams and three other nominees, "I am pleased to nominate these distinguished individuals to serve on the United States District Court bench. I am confident they will serve the American people with integrity and a steadfast commitment to justice."[2]

The American Bar Association rated Abrams Unanimously Well Qualified for the nomination.[4]

Hearings on Abrams' nomination were held in the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary on May 18, 2016.[5] On January 3, 2017, Abrams' nomination was returned to President Obama at the sine die adjournment of the 114th Congress.[3]

Career

Abrams began his career in 1983 as a litigation associate with the firm Jeffer, Mangels, Butler and Marmaro. From 1985 to 1987, he was the Director of the San Fernando Valley Office of Bet Tzedek Legal Services. He then worked as a Deputy Federal Public Defender for the Central District of California through 2001. He has served as a magistrate judge since January of 2002.[1]
