An effort in Los Angeles, California, to recall City Councilmember Paul Krekorian from his position was launched in February 2016. A notice was sent to Krekorian by recall supporters in mid-February to initiate the process.[1] The Los Angeles City Clerk approved a recall petition for circulation on April 8, 2016.[2] The recall did not go to a vote because supporters failed to submit enough signatures for an election.[3]

Petition sponsors JoAnn Erickson and Donna Gooley cited Krekorian's votes on real estate projects and zoning rules. Erickson highlighted the growth in high-rise buildings in the city in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. Gooley noted the city's demolition of a home previously owned by actress Marilyn Monroe to make room for a condo development.[1]

Response by Paul Krekorian

Krekorian told the Los Angeles Times that voters approved his 2015 re-election bid with 75 percent of the vote. He also made the following statement:

In any district with a quarter million people, there will always be a few disaffected and unhappy individuals, but I’ll continue to work hard every day to represent the interests and the values of the people of the 2nd District. [4]

—Paul Krekorian (2016), [1]

Recall supporters needed at least 18,536 valid signatures from Krekorian's council district to force an election. This total equaled 15 percent of registered voters in District 2. City Clerk Holly Wolcott estimated that a special recall election would have cost the city $1.7 million.[1] The deadline for signature submission was July 26, 2016.[2]
