Campaign themes
2014
Thelen's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[1]
Roads & Bridges
- Excerpt: "Numerous studies confirm what Iowans already know: many of our roads and bridges are in need of repair. We need a smart, comprehensive strategy to maximize our resources to meet this challenge. Like generations of Iowans before us, we should be investing in our state infrastructure. I'm willing to invest in Iowa."
Rural Broadband
- Excerpt: "High-quality rural broadband internet immediately improves the lives of rural Iowans and will attract new people and businesses to our state. We need more advocates for rural broadband in Des Moines to make this potential a reality."
Mental Health
- Excerpt: "Access to high-quality mental health professionals and facilities is a challenge in Iowa. One reason is that we have too few psychiatrists to meet our demands. Another reason is that patients must often travel great distances for care. We must decide that mental health is as important as physical health. Together, we can make a healthier Iowa."
Education Assessment
- Excerpt: "The next leap forward in education will come from implementing strategies that help teachers teach and students learn. It sounds simple, but education assessment must improve to help utilize classroom resources and maximize student potential. I believe teachers should teach and assessors should assess. Our goal is to return Iowa to the top spot in the nation in education."
