Candidate Connection

Paula Garcia participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on March 27, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Paula Garcia's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Education

2) Job Creation
3) Natural Resource Protection[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

For the past twenty years, I have been an advocate for rural communities at the State Legislature. I represent a grassroots non-profit that advocates for protection of land and water and for the revitalization of traditional agriculture and local food systems. As a lawmaker, I would continue my advocacy for farmers and ranchers in protecting historic agricultural water rights. As I policymaker, I would prioritize rural jobs and small business creation. In my region of the state, vocational education is important for cultivating a robust and adaptable workforce. Our state needs more incentives for small businesses and access to start-up capital. Community colleges are essential to building a workforce for a sustainable rural economy, including a transition to clean energy. I would also be a strong proponent of access to high-speed internet to encourage diversification of rural economic development. In rural communities, infrastructure is of paramount importance. I would advocate for reform in infrastructure funding to ensure that rural communities have a level playing field in accessing state infrastructure funding for rural drinking water systems, fire departments, roads, and acequias (community irrigation systems). I am also deeply committed to improving child well being in New Mexico. I'm supportive of funding early childhood education and advocating that all children have access to quality K-12 education with more teaching and less testing. Our state also has an important obligation to ensure that our services for seniors and veterans are provided with reliable recurring funding. As a legislator, I would be a dedicated advocate to fund the operations, construction, and improvements for senior centers. Rural veterans need special consideration in terms of access to health care and advocacy in navigating agencies for services.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Paula Garcia answered the following:

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

One important responsibility for a state legislator is active listening to understand the concerns, success stories, and needs of the people you represent. Another responsibility is responsiveness to people of the district by using information gathered to form policy initiatives for systemic change. Elected officials are also called upon to be a resource to our constituents acting as their advocates within different levels of local, state, and federal government.[3]
