Paula McCraney represents over 30,000 residents in eastern Jefferson County. She serves on the Budget, Government Oversight & Audit, and Public Safety Committees. In addition, she co-chairs Metro Council’s Women’s Caucus and serves on the Contracting and Procurement Task Force, Domestic Violence Prevention Coordinating Council, and Juneteenth Jubilee Commission.

Councilwoman McCraney co-sponsored Breonna’s Law, which outlawed No-Knock Warrants and regulated police body cameras. She sponsored the Animal Abuse and Domestic Violence ordinance and is known as the Civilian Review and Accountability Board architect.

Her advocacy for affordable housing and participation on the ARP Housing Task Force resulted in the funding of $40 million for the Affordable Housing Trust Fund; $32 million for permanent supportive housing with wrap-around services; $7.5 million for renovation of affordable housing units; $1.5 million for outdoor safe space operations, and $8 million for down payment assistance and home repair. Paula earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Oklahoma State University, a Master’s degree in Business from Webster University, and is a doctoral student at Spalding University. She is a graduate of Focus Louisville, Leadership Louisville, Bingham Fellows, and Leadership Kentucky. In addition, she owns P Mc & Associates Consulting and The Traveling Boutique.

  • I want to continue advocating for District 7 and seeing our projects to fruition. I’ve secured $100,000 in the Louisville Metro budget to improve portions of Westport Road, worked with a State Representative to secure $350,000 for Herr Lane improvements $250,000 for a traffic study near the VA Medical Center. Additionally, I have worked closely with MSD to resolve several District 7 drainage issues, arranged for the repair of numerous sidewalks, installation of several streetlights, and posting of street signage, partnered with the City of Lyndon to provide $60,000 toward a sidewalk project along Ormsby and LaGrange Rd., and formed a professional working relationship with VA Medical Center to provide weekly updates regarding on-site work. I
  • I am a former banker who understands the city budget and the needs of the community. I listen to constituents, and I scrutinize every aspect of the budget to fight hard and legislate thoughtfully to create a balanced budget that works for all. I am a former director of public relations for the Jefferson County Clerk's Office, so I understand the power of the vote and will always respect the constituents I serve and thoughtfully honor their vote and confidence in me. I’m known on the Council as someone who is always prepared for Committee and Council discussions or debates, and am a conscientious legislature who has sponsored essential legislation that makes Louisville a better place to live, work, play, and raise a family.
  • Commitment to the community, advocacy, and hard work has earned me the endorsements from Better Schools Kentucky (JCTA), Greater Louisville Central Labor Council, Louisville Professional Firefighters Local 345, Laborers International Union of North America – AFL-CIO, The Political Women’s Council, and Teamsters Local Union 783. Elected officials do not earn these types of endorsements if they are not doing the job voters expected them to do when they voted them into office. These endorsements are only the beginning of the support that will be expressed for my re-election candidacy. My re-election will guarantee that District 7 and Louisville Metro will have a strong, proven voice and advocate on their side.
My top priorities and the issues that keep me fighting for Louisvillians are:

Public Safety - The right to bear arms while removing illegal guns off the streets; cracking down and prosecuting gang members to the fullest extent of the law; holding parents of juveniles accountable for violent crimes committed by their children; creating safe places, after school programs, and recreational facilities for youth; advocating for a crime prevention and root cause commission to develop a strategic plan to combat crime and support the police force; and supporting the implementation of mental health responders for non-violent crimes by people with mental health issues.

Housing - the 30,000+ shortage and affordability

Drainage issues in District 7

Infrastructure - Road improvements, traffic improvements, traffic congestion

Smart economic development in my densely populated District

Homelessness/Houselessness - Expanding the safe space project to remove homeless encampments from neighborhoods and streets; funding wrap-around services such as job training, mental health, and drug abuse programs to assist people experiencing homelessness.
The Louisville Metro Council is responsible for reviewing the Louisville Metro Government (city) budget, approving appointments to boards and commissions, and oversight of local government.
I always recommend to everyone interested in seeking office to read and understand the United States Constitution.
Honesty, integrity, and a genuine concern for the lives and liberties of people are the most important characteristics of all elected officials.
I am a servant leader. My number one goal in everything I do is to serve. My leadership style is collaborative and I consider authority rather than power to be effective for the community I serve.
The core responsibilities of a Louisville Metro Councilmember are constituent services, attendance and participation in Council and Committee meetings, and reviewing and enactment of ordinances.
I have experienced many historical and meaningful events in my life, including the day I was married to my incredible husband of 35 years, the birth of both of my sons (now 32 and 30 years old!), being named a Who's Who in Louisville, graduating from Leadership Louisville and Leadership Kentucky, and writing, directing, and producing five stage plays. However, the most significant and rewarding event occurred when I was called to the ministry and granted an opportunity to preach my initial sermon. My sermon topic was "As-Is." By the end of the sermon, the audience voluntarily and surprisingly participated in a call and response to my speech, which let me know that my message resonated with them. I felt truly blessed.
The Louisville Metro Council is the legislative branch of government that is separate from the executive branch and, of course, the judicial branches of government. The power to enact laws that most affect the daily lives of its residents is a powerful function of this local government entity.
Previous experience in government is not a requirement for holding office as a Metro Councilmember; however, it is vital that all persons running for the office of Metro Council be familiar with the three forms of government, understand budgeting, and know the needs of the community, especially the 25,000 - 30,000 residents who reside in the district they are wanting to represent.
Helpful skills for a Metro Councilmember include knowledge of municipal budgeting, good customer service (constituent service), listening and communication, and negotiation/collaboration.
My favorite joke to tell is a real story that actually happened to me as a result of a conversation I had with my boyfriend (current husband now) as we were getting to know each other. It is:

Me: How many brothers and sisters do you have?

Husband: Three

Note: As I was incrementally introduced to the family, I met a sister, later another sister and a brother, then another brother and another sister and brother.

Me: I thought you had three brothers and sisters?

Husband: I do. I have three brothers and I have three sisters.

Note: We've been miscommunicating for over 30 years! :-)
