The August 26, 2014, general election in Hillsborough County featured three seats up for election. The general election determined if candidates for each seat could garner a majority of the vote total. Because no candidate received 50 percent plus one of the general election votes in any of the districts, the top two vote recipients in all three races advanced to the runoff election on November 4, 2014.

District 6 incumbent April Griffin was the only board member to seek re-election and faced a challenge from seven other candidates in the general election. Griffin advanced to the runoff election with challenger Dipa Shah.

Newcomers Sally Harris, Michelle Popp Shimberg and Michael Weston ran for the District 2 seat. Shimberg and Harris advanced to the runoff election. Terry Kemple, Dee Prether and Melissa Snively sought election to the District 4 seat. Snively and Temple advanced to the runoff election for the open seat.

Campaign themes

2014

Meckley's campaign website listed the following themes for the 2014 race:

Student Achievement

  • Improving student achievement at every learning level by setting high expectations through relevant and rigorous course work.
  • Support teachers through open communication with an emphasis on response to teacher feedback. Offer on and off site professional development opportunities for teachers to continually refine their craft. The most powerful tool and valuable asset the district possesses is highly trained teachers who set high expectations and create a culture for learning in each and every classroom.
  • Respect and empower principals to make appropriate instructional decisions through district support of non-instructional responsibilities. This will enable time for in-depth data analysis of student performance and help with teaching and instructional coaching at the school level, and feedback for curriculum resources and professional development at the district level.
  • Education starts with parents as the learning facilitators. Ensure schools are welcoming places that encourage parental involvement. Nothing is more important on a child’s learning journey than an involved parent.

Collaborative Leadership

  • It takes ideas and input from all stakeholder to ensure great public schools. School Board member visibility in our schools and the community is important. Committing the time to listen to feedback can provide valuable insight and in some cases advance notice of issues before they become problematic. Open communication in an environment where all involved feel valued is important.

School Safety

  • Must be a priority. Collaboration with the district’s internal security department as well as with local police and the sheriff’s office is key to implementing the best possible safety and security plan.
  • Teachers, students and parents should be encouraged to contribute to school safety by reporting information that could potentially be a security concern.

Budget Oversight and Transparency

  • Fiscal responsibility is the only way to do business. Demonstrating good stewardship of the public’s money and instilling trust that all financial transactions are transparent.

Technology

  • Plays a key role in how students learn and gather information in today’s world. Having a long term technology implementation and rejuvenation plan is instrumental in making the best use of technology in our classrooms and ensuring availability for all students.
