Paula Stannard is an attorney with Alston & Bird LLP in Washington, D.C. She previously served as a deputy general counsel and acting general counsel for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Stannard was also a member of Donald Trump's presidential transition team, a group of advisors tasked with recommending presidential appointments for the incoming administration.[1][2]

Career

Stannard earned an undergraduate degree in political science and Latin from Amherst College in 1987 and a J.D. from Stanford University Law School in 1990.[2][3]

Following law school, Stannard worked as a clerk for the Honorable J.L. Edmondson of the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit in Atlanta, Georgia. She joined the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and Affiliates in Chicago, Illinois, as an associate in 1991. Ten years later, Stannard transitioned to the role of counselor to the general counsel at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). She rose to the role of deputy general counsel at HHS in 2003 and served as the department's acting general counsel for the majority of former President George W. Bush's (R) two terms.[3]

Stannard returned to the private sector in 2010 as an attorney with the law firm Alston & Bird LLC in Washington, D.C.[2][3]

Stannard was a member of Donald Trump's presidential transition team in his first presidential term. The transition team was a group of around 100 aides, policy experts, government affairs officials, and former government officials who were tasked with vetting, interviewing, and recommending individuals for top cabinet and staff roles in Trump's administration.

According to Politico, Stannard was the "point person on health reform" for the transition team.[1]
