|One of my great passions in life is education, and my 40 years of personal experience is extensive and varied. I homeschooled my children for 7 years, taught at a public charter and private school, helped found and lead a startup charter school as Board Chair, and served as Vice-Chair of the largest charter school in Colorado. In addition, I acted as Director of the GEAR UP Federal Education Grant for at-risk public schools in Colorado, and from 2004-2010 represented the 5th Congressional District on the Colorado State Board of Education. I subsequently served as a County Commissioner for El Paso County.
Even though it would be tempting to retire and pursue my hobbies, my faith and my passion for seeing that all children have opportunity for success has led me to seek public office again to serve, protect, and empower our most valuable asset – our children. I believe that a solid education in the basics is critical to the success of Colorado's future generations and is the great equalizer. As a former State Board of Education member, I am fully aware of the difference a seasoned leader can make. There won’t be any learning curve for me. I can hit the ground running, fighting for the hearts and minds of our children, and advocating for parents & teachers.- Reverse Declining Academic Performance. I was on the State board of Education from 2004-2001. Since my departure, english, language arts and math scores have plummeted. We must separate from the National Common Core standards and go back to Colorado content standards. We must revamp teacher licensure and look at ways to come alongside teachers to fill in gaps for teaching science based literacy instruction.
- End the promotion of based agendas within schools, and protect the innocence of our children. Too often, I hear from parents that they are deeply troubled by the intentional indoctrination forced upon their children without parental consent.
- Get Back to the Basics! Make reading, writing (cursive too!), math, science, factual history and the arts for a well rounded education the focus.
Transparency in the classroom and school. Parents should be able to see curriculum, observe in the classrooms, know where funding is being spent for professional development and the content of the professional development.
