Pender Makin is the Maine Commissioner of Education. She assumed office in 2019. Her current term ends on January 6, 2027.
Biography
Makin previously served as assistant superintendent of schools in the Brunswick School Department from 2015 to 2019.[1] She was also a teacher and school principal. Makin co-founded the Collaborative for Perpetual Innovation, a technical assistance, professional development, and consulting company for education professionals. She earned degrees in English literature and school leadership from the University of Southern Maine. She received her teacher certification from the University of New England in 1996.[2]

On December 26, 2018, Gov.-elect Janet Mills (D) nominated Makin to serve as the Maine commissioner of education.[3]
