Having served in the community as a local church leader for over 10 years, I have been a devoted advocate for helping people live peaceful and productive lives. I have been instrumental in decreasing food insecurities in our community by overseeing monthly food and grocery distributions for over 2,500 individuals.

With over 30-years’ entrepreneurial experience in service and retail industries, and as an Asset Manager for commercial properties in downtown Sacramento, I am well-suited to address our community’s need for public safety, affordable housing, educational programs, and good paying jobs that provide the income required to invest in businesses and homes.

I have a Bachelor of Science in Marketing and an MBA, with an emphasis in Strategic Leadership. As your newly elected City Councilmember, I will bring a fresh perspective of innovative solutions that will help in the revitalization of District 2. I am results-oriented and will engage with community and civic leaders, law enforcement officers, business owners, and local residents to ensure our communities are a safe and attractive place for seniors, families, teens, and kids to live, work, and play.

I am interested in getting to know the residents of District 2 and see your families grow and flourish in our vibrant community.

  • Community Beautification. Organize regular community clean-up events where residents come together to pick up trash, remove graffiti, and beautify public spaces. Help people have pride of ownership because they have played an important role in cleaning up the area where they live. Also use these times for local artists to create vibrant murals that add color, tell stories, and highlights the lives of local, former leaders. Use this opportunity to plant trees and flowers. Use these clean-up days to promote youth educational programs about sustainability and introduce the various resources within the community.
  • Unsheltered Population. Addressing our unsheltered situation in D2 is a multifaceted challenge requiring a multifaceted approach. Some steps we can take include (1) increasing availability of affordable housing by collaborating with local housing authorities and developers to create more affordable housing options. (2) providing mental health services via outreach teams that help with mental health counseling and addiction treatment to address the root causes of homelessness. (3) setting up safe ground encampments and temporary shelters with sanitation facilities and mental health and social services. (4) educating the public about the complexities of homelessness to reduce stigmas associated with being homeless, so there is more compassion
  • Housing. We need to increase our housing supply, that includes affordable housing and housing that is affordable; providing options for renters to become homeowners. We need to provide a smooth permitting process that allows developers to build single family residences in our communities at market rate. Also, focusing on creating more affordable rental housing, that includes building new units or preserving existing ones to ensure long-term affordability.
There are a few areas of public policy that I am particularly passionate about namely, climate change and environmental policies. I believe we must (1) continue to strive to leave a better planet than the one where we live, and that we must continuously promote sustainable practices while protecting our natural resources. (2) our educational system must work to reduce disparities while enhancing opportunities for every student, creating wonderful learning opportunities. (3) I support strategies for economic growth and income equality, equal pay for equal work. I envision a district that thrives because people are intentional about fair wages and
I have a 4-point principal structure that I believe are important for an elected official:

1. Integrity.
2. Accountability.
3. Collaboration.

4. Transparency.
A list of the qualities I have that will make me a successful officeholder include:

1. Leadership, the ability to inspire and guide a team toward common goals.
2. Integrity, upholding ethical standards, including honesty and transparency.
3. Communication, I have the ability to communicate with constituents, colleagues, and the public on multifaceted, down-to-earth levels, verbally and in writing.
4. Problem-Solving, I have the capability of making informed decisions while analyzing both simple and complex issues.
5. Empathy, my experiences provide me with the ability to relate, understand, and empathize with the needs and concerns of diverse communities in ways that provide effective representation.
6. Collaboration, I work well with others to build coalitions and find common ground when working towards finding solutions for community problems.

7. Adaptability, a quality I possess by being open to learning, hearing new ideas, and making the necessary adjustments to achieve success.
The first historical event that happened was when I ran track as an independent at the Junior Olympics and came in 3rd place. I was about 11 or 12 and was subsequently invited to join several professional track teams after that experience. From this experience, I learned how perseverance, hard work, and listening to my track coach would pay off. I felt so proud of myself and what I had accomplished.
“A dying man gathered his best friends - a lawyer, doctor, and clergyman - at his bedside and handed each of them an envelope containing $25, 000 in cash. He made them each promise that after his death and before the closing of his casket, they would place the three envelops in his coffin. He told them that he wanted to have enough money to enjoy the next life.

A week later the man died. At the wake, the lawyer, doctor, and clergyman each concealed an envelope in the coffin and bid their old client and friend farewell. By chance, these three met several months later. Soon the clergyman, feeling guilty, blurted out a confession saying that there was only $10, 000 in the envelope he placed in the coffin. He felt, rather than waste all the money, he would send it to a mission in South America. He asked for their forgiveness.

The doctor, moved by the Clergyman’s sincerity, confessed that he too had kept some of the money for a worthy medical charity. The envelope, he admitted, had only $8000 in it. He said he too could not bring himself to waste the money so frivolously when it could be used to benefit others.

By this time the Lawyer was seething with self-righteous outrage. He expressed his deep disappointment in the felonious behavior of two of his oldest and most trusted friends. “I am the only one who kept my promise to our dying friend. I want you both to know that the envelope I placed in the coffin contained the full amount. The other men looked down in embarrassment and the lawyer continued, “Indeed, only I honored the deathbed wishes of our great friend. My envelope contained my personal check for the entire $25, 000.”
Jay King, Individual (President, California Black Chamber of Commerce)
