Structure
Mission
The mission statement of the Pennsylvania Department of Education reads:[1]
| “ | The mission of the Department of Education is to ensure that every learner has access to a world-class education system that academically prepares children and adults to succeed as productive citizens. Further, the Department seeks to establish a culture that is committed to improving opportunities throughout the commonwealth by ensuring that technical support, resources, and optimal learning environments are available for all students, whether children or adults.[2] | ” |
Superintendent
The acting Pennsylvania Secretary of Education is Carrie Rowe (nonpartisan). Rowe assumed office in 2025.
State Board of Education
The State Board of Education is the largest in the nation with 21 members. Ten members serve as the Board’s Council of Basic Education and ten serve as the Board’s Council of Higher Education. 17 members are appointed by the Governor, with the advice and consent of the Senate, for overlapping terms of six years. Four members of the Board are members of the General Assembly who serve as long as they hold majority and minority chairs of the House and Senate Education Committees. The chairperson of the Professional Standards and Practices Commission is a non-voting, ex officio Board member. Chairpersons of the Board and its Councils are designated by the Governor. The 21 members of the board also serve as the State Board of Career and Technical Education. [3]
