My personal hero is my grandmother. She has been the one person in my life who showed me consistency. She was a woman of faith, and throughout her difficult life she has always depended on the Lord to guide her. Nan Yohe has instilled in me a personal confidence and determination to always do what is right no matter how difficult it may be.
My professional role model is Representative Mike Jones (Current PA State Rep-district 93). Mike raised the bar as to what a representative should look like. He is actively involved in the community and is a bold voice in standing up for the people. He models the kind of representative that I will be for District 94.
I have a passion and love for people and a boldness to stand up for what is right. By not having a political background, I am not connected to anyone or owe anyone any favors within the legislature. I am going in with a clean slate to do the will of the people. I have lived a very humble life and am able to relate to the needs and struggles of the people.
The core responsibility of State Representative is to "represent the people." She should be involved in the communities throughout the district; know the people personally so that she knows how to best serve them in her position. Also, a representative should be a bridge between her constituents and Harrisburg, relaying information to both sides.
"I Will Fear No More" by The Afters is the song currently in my head, although it changes sometimes hourly! I typically listen to Christian Worship music, but I do also love 80's pop!
Ideally, legislators and the governor should be working together as partners. The Governor, Senate, and House, being equal in authority, need to work together to support the will of the people.
While some people see a unicameral legislature beneficial because of the ability to pass bills into laws so quickly, I disagree and see that as a drawback. The beauty of our bicameral system is the checks and balances that it provides. It allows a bill to be scrutinized to make sure that it is the best it can be and not simply rushed through the system.
Our forefathers were not politicians. They were brave men, from different backgrounds, who worked together to create a system where the people's voice was the governing power. Although I feel that it is important, and necessary, to understand the structure of our government, I do not believe that one must have "experience" in government or politics. In fact, I believe we need citizen legislators who understand the real struggles and needs of the people.
While it is important to maintain a professional relationship with co-workers in order to work well together, developing personal relationships can lead to an influence on voting. It is the job of the legislator to always put the will of the people first and not be influenced by friendships with other legislators.
I strive to model myself after Representative Dawn Keefer (current PA Representative-District 92) and Senator Kristin Phillips-Hill (Current PA Senator-District 28) who take a strong stance in supporting their constituents. They are both actively involved in their communities and writing legislation that supports the best interest of the people.
I do not believe that the legislators should have the authority to grant use of emergency powers. Citizens have a right to make choices for themselves and their families, within the restraints of the law.
