Two of the seven seats on the Peoria Public Schools District 150 school board were up for general election on March 15, 2016. District 2 incumbent Debbie Wolfmeyer and District 3 incumbent Rick Cloyd did not file for re-election. Robert Aviles ran unopposed and won the District 2 seat. In District 3, Daniel Walther defeated Terry Spayer for the open seat.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Peoria Board of Education consists of seven members elected by district to five-year terms on a staggered basis every year. During even-numbered years, the elections are held in March, and in odd-numbered years the elections are held in April. A general election for two full-term seats was held on March 15, 2016.[2]

A candidate for the board of education must be 18 years old, a resident of the district for at least one year prior to the election and a registered voter.[2] To get on the ballot, school board candidates had to file a notarized statement of candidacy and notarized nominating petitions with the Peoria County Clerk's Office during the filing period. The filing period began October 26, 2015, and ended November 2, 2015. The nominating petitions had to include the signatures of 200 voters residing in the school district.[3]

Early voting in this election took place from February 4, 2016, to March 14, 2016. The last day to register to vote in this election was February 16, 2016.[4]

Campaign finance

School board candidates in Illinois are only required to file campaign finance reports if they accept contributions or make expenditures in excess of $5,000 in a 12-month period.[8] No contributions or expenditures were reported during the election, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections.[9]

Peoria Public Schools District 150 is located in Peoria in central Illinois, which is the seat of government for the county of the same name. Peoria County was home to 187,319 residents in 2014, according to the United States Census Bureau.[11] Peoria Public Schools District 150 was the 14th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 13,778 students.[12]

Peoria County underperformed compared to Illinois as a whole in terms of higher education achievement in 2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 28.9 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 31.4 percent of state residents.
