I love LA. It pains me that our problems keep getting worse, not better.

I’m not a politician, and I’ve never run for office before now. I'll never take money from lobbyists or anyone else who would sit on the other side of the bargaining table. I'm not leaning left or right, I'm leaning forward toward solutions. I'm officially registered as "No Party Preference" and believe our leaders should represent all of us, not just Team Red or Team Blue.

I live in Acton with my life partner Myra, and our three dogs we adopted from the County shelter in 2019. I’m the proud father of two incredible young adults. I am certain that our problems are solvable and that the Board of Supervisors has the power to solve them. I refuse to sit back and watch as our elected leaders fail to protect us.

I’ve spent my career coming up with new ideas that are both smart economics and the right thing to do, like turning our powder-keg of dry brush into a valuable soil amendment (biochar) that can be sold for a profit.

My problem-solving journey began in elementary school, when I learned how to solve the Rubik’s Cube with a novel solution of my own creation. My fastest time even beat the then world record. In college, I studied economics at Wharton Business School, where I graduated in the top 1% of my class. My next stop was Harvard Law School, where I graduated with honors. My education has helped me succeed as a non-profit leader, lawyer and entrepreneur.
  • I believe that everyone running for office should have clearly stated goals and specific plans for achieving those goals, yet I am the only person in this race who can say that.
  • I am the only person in this race who intends to bridge the divide between the red and blue to find smart "purple" solutions that meet the interests of everyone.
  • I have a plan to end homelessness by 2028. The plan involves smart development in the Antelope Valley, which has inexpensive vacant land in sufficient quantity to enable 100,000 new residential housing units. To overcome NIMBY issues, a substantial portion of this new housing can be for retirement communities. This will enable retirees in the urban areas to downsize their housing and retire to a quieter part of the County. This in turn will open up housing in the urban areas. Another substantial portion of the new housing in the AV can be for employee housing tied both to existing employers (e.g., the large aerospace companies) and to water-smart small farms where anyone who needs a job and home can live and work and pay their own way.
I'm passionate about affordability, as that impacts everyone. I believe we can greatly reduce the cost of housing for everyone by dramatically increasing the supply of housing.

I'm also passionate about improving LA's transportation, especially Metrolink service. My vision is for Metrolink service to be more convenient than driving, which will help us finally solve our traffic problems and improve our deadly air quality that is shortening our lives by an average of four months.

Another passion of mine is eliminating our wildfire risk. We can do that by converting our dry brush to biochar, which is a valuable commodity. Because that activity pays for itself, it can be scaled up and we can finally be safe from this danger.
The Board of Supervisors is in a unique position to bring about the change that is desperately needed with respect to affordability, housing, transportation, public safety, wildfires, and every other area that impacts the daily lives of Angelenos.
My role models include Benjamin Franklin, Mohandas Ghandi, and Martin Luther King.
I believe it's important to have a clear vision that can be articulated to the constituents. For that reason, one of my heroes is Martin Luther King, whose famous "I have a dream" speech painted a picture of equality that inspired great change.
I believe our elected officials should represent everyone, not just team red or team blue. I also think our elected officials should be scrupulous in avoiding conflicts of interest and even the appearance of a possible conflict.
I believe the core responsibilities are to solve the problems we are facing, prepare the County to tackle future problems, and inspire everyone living in the County to be engaged in civic life.
My favorite book is the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.
There are many little-known powers held by the Supervisors, including that they each hold seats on the Board of LA Metro. They also have great influence with respect to the $74 billion pension fund managed by LACERA. And the operation of LA's Local Area Formation Commission, which determines whether new cities can be created within the County.
What we have seen is that our career politicians have not solved our problems. Instead, our problems have been getting worse as bureaucrats fail to bring forward creative solutions. I have come to believe that we need outsiders with fresh perspectives and the right skillsets to get Los Angeles moving in the right direction.
A strong grasp on how the economy works is critical, and I would be the only person on the Board with a degree in economics. I also believe that a deep understanding of the law is very important, as the Board is the legislative branch for the County and the laws that we put in place are how policy is converted to action. I would be the only person on the Board with a law degree. In addition, I believe it's important to have a real understanding of how well-functioning businesses operate, and I would be the only successful entrepreneur on the Board.
Financial transparency and government accountability are both extremely important, and I would do much more than just pay lip service to them. My intention is to truly transform County government in both respects. And I ask the voters to hold me accountable to that promise and all my other goals.
