Three of the nine seats on the Perth Amboy Public Schools school board were up for at-large general election on November 8, 2016. Randy Convery, Junior Iglesia, and Tashi Vazquez won election to the three seats on the board by defeating incumbents Samuel Lebreault, Israel Varela, and Anthony Bermudez, as well as challengers Ruben Cruz and Hattie Harrell.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Perth Amboy school board consists of nine members elected at large to three-year terms. Three members are up for election every year in November. The district does not hold primary elections. The general election was held on November 8, 2016.[2][3]

School board candidates had to be U.S. citizens and residents of the school district for at least one year prior to the election. They also had to be able to read and write and be registered voters. They could not hold another elected municipal office in Perth Amboy, such as mayor or town council member. To get on the ballot, candidates had to file their nominating petitions with the Middlesex County Clerk's Office.[2]

Perth Amboy Public Schools is located in Middlesex County, New Jersey. The county seat is New Brunswick. Middlesex County was home to 840,900 residents in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[8] The district was the 16th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 9,988 students.[9]

Demographics

Middlesex County outperformed New Jersey as a whole in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 40.7 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 36.4 percent of all state residents. The median household income in Middlesex County was $80,118, compared to $72,062 for the entire state. The poverty rate in the county was 8.3 percent, compared to 10.8 percent statewide.[8]
