A recall effort was launched against Supervisor Pete Candland in Prince William County, Virginia. The petition to recall Candland focused on alleged neglect of duty and misuse of office surrounding his involvement in data center votes. In November 2021, Candland's neighborhood joined a Comprehensive Plan Amendment to change the property's zoning from agriculture to technology which recall supporters argued is a conflict of interest with his duties as a county supervisor.[1] Chair of the board Ann Wheeler is also the target of a recall effort surrounding conflicts of interest.[2]
Candland announced his resignation from the Prince William Board of County Supervisors on December 10, 2022, effective December 16, 2022.[3]

Candland gave the following statement to the Bull Run Observer in June 2022:
| “ | At this point, this is nothing more than a small group of individuals that has put together a list of inaccurate concerns they have with my performance as supervisor. What they are alleging is not true.” Referring to the Commonwealth Attorney, Candland said, “It’s important to note, that I reached out to her to ask for her opinion and advice. Throughout this entire process, I’ve been acting according to the state statute to the best of my knowledge.”[4] | ” |
