Pete Meachum, a veteran Republican operative, was the Wisconsin state director for Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.[1]
Career
Rep. Kevin McCarthy's office
After graduating from the University of Virginia in 1995, Pete Meachum worked as the chief of staff for former U.S. Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite (R-Fla.). Meachum served in this capacity until joining the staff of U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) as the director of member services. In April 2011, Meachum made news when he sent an email to chiefs of staff in the U.S. House suggesting that representatives who opposed a continuing resolution at the time were more concerned with future elections than the resolution itself. His email said, "For the handwringers out there, buck up. ... For those seeking other office please campaign at home, not on the backs of your colleagues." The last four words of the email linked to photos of Jane Fonda visiting Vietnam.[2]

In June 2011, Meachum left McCarthy's office to work as the director of development for the American Action Network, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization that aims to advocate for "the principles of freedom, limited government, American exceptionalism, and strong national security."[3] At the time of his hiring, American Action Forum's president Douglas Holtz-Eakin said, "As the Forum continues to expand, Pete’s familiarity with Washington and strategic thinking will play an integral role in our growth and success going forward."[4]
Rep. Sean Duffy's office
Meachum joined the staff of U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy (R-Wis.) as chief of staff in 2013 just after Duffy was re-elected.[5] He served in this role until joining the Trump campaign in 2016.

Meachum's hiring as the Wisconsin state director was initially reported on June 30, 2016. The Trump campaign officially announced his hiring in a press release on July 18, 2016.[1] On July 10, 2016, Meachum reacted to a poll that showed Trump trailing Hillary Clinton (D). Meachum said, "This is a head to head race between the true outsider Donald Trump and untrustworthy Hillary Clinton. ... Wisconsin will be a battleground. In November, voters will know the difference between Donald Trump, who is fighting for them, fighting for real change, and Hillary Clinton — a candidate who has spent her entire career enriching herself and lying to the American people."[6]
