Pete Biondi (b. June 23, 1942 - d. November 10, 2011) was a Republican member of the New Jersey General Assembly, representing District 16 from 1998 to 2011. He passed away on November 10, 2011, after a battle with cancer.[1]

A special election to fill his seat was called for November 6, 2012--local party officials selected Donna Simon (R) to replace Biondi.[2][3]

While in office, he served as Republican Conference Leader from 2006 to 2009. Prior to his election to the Assembly, Biondi served on the Hillsborough Township Planning Board from 1986 to 1999, the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders from 1994 to 1997 and was mayor of Hillsborough Township from 1986 to 1993.[4]

Speculation

District 16 was also significantly reshaped in 2011, moving its population center away from Somerset County. All of the Republican candidates (two incumbents and one challenger) are from the Somerset area. However, NJSpotlight noted that despite these changes and balanced partisan registration, the Democratic ticket was not very familiar to voters.[7][8]

Running for re-election in the November 3, 2009, general election, Biondi received 45,036 votes (34%), defeating challengers Mark Petraske and Roberta Karpinecz.[9] He was bracketed with Denise Coyle. [10]
