Durant was a candidate for the Massachusetts House of Representatives, Sixth Worcester District in the November 2, 2010 state legislative election. Durant defeated Michael Jaynes in the September 14 Republican primary. The general election race between incumbent Geraldo Alicea (D) and Durant was declared a tie and required a new election.[7] Superior Court Judge Richard Tucker ruled that one absentee ballot that had been discarded should count for Alicea, thus creating a tie at 6,587 votes each.[7]

A new election was set for May 10, 2011, with a primary on April 12, 2011. In keeping with the Massachusetts Constitution, Alicea continued to occupy the Sixth Worcester seat until a new election was declared.[8]

Durant's campaign site highlighted the following campaign themes:

  • The Economy and Jobs: "Time and again we see that the way to stimulate and rebuild our economy is with lower not higher taxes. Lower taxes means more money for individuals to spend, and more money for businesses to invest and create jobs. Higher taxes stifle growth, discourage investment, and prolong our recession. To get this economy back on track there are several concrete steps we must take now."
  • Accountability in Government: "The people of Massachusetts are frustrated. We're frustrated because our government is unresponsive to our concerns, and uncaring of our needs. We're frustrated because we have a government that can't seem to do what it is supposed to: Protect our lives and property, educate our children to compete in the world, and provide us the opportunity to prosper and thrive as we see fit. Instead, government grows for the sake of growing, and spends our money recklessly. We need to end the wasteful spending on Beacon Hill, and demand more accountability from our elected leaders. I will push for meaningful reform from our government, and hold people accountable for their results."
  • Education: "We are fortunate here in Massachusetts to have one of the best educational systems in the country. Unfortunately however, we are now competing with the rest of the world. The technologies of tomorrow come from the education that our children receive today and we need to improve that education, especially in the areas of math and science, or risk becoming a second class country."
  • Registry of Motor Vehicles: "I don't think there is another local issue that better illustrates the blatant disregard Beacon Hill has for those it serves, as the debacle of the Southbridge Registry. We need a real solutions and out-of-the-box thinking to make dealing with the RMV a win-win situation for both the community and government."
  • Casino Gambling: "While I do not believe that casinos should be used as the cure-all to our state budget woes, I do support casino gambling in Massachusetts. It seems to me to be a waste that the tax dollars generated by casino gambling should go to our neighbors in Connecticut and Rhode Island. In addition, Massachusetts casinos would mean that those who prefer that type of entertainment will have places closer to home in which to travel to, should they enjoy gambling. In addition, permanent, well paying jobs will be created."

Scorecards

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.

Click here for an overview of legislative scorecards in all 50 states. To contribute to the list of Massachusetts scorecards, email suggestions to editor@ballotpedia.org.
